Breaking news in Goshen:

Dozens of people Tuesday night passionately pleaded for and against the addition of sexual orientation language to Goshen's Community Relations Commission ordinance.

In a 4-3 vote the Goshen council voted in favor of the amendment that will add "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to the Community Relations Commission ordinance. This was only a first reading of the amendment, however.

The second reading will take place when the council meets again September 1st. If the vote stands in September, the the words "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" will be added to the ordinance which already includes protection for race, religion, color, sex, disability, national origin or ancestry.

Interestingly:

When asked how the Goshen Chamber of Commerce stood on the issue, Mayor Kauffman said the Chamber's policy committee voted Tuesday morning to support the amendment but the overall Chamber has not taken a stand.

Question is, will the South Bend Common Council follow suit?

Not if Patrick Mangan, Executive Director of the Citizens for Community Values of Indiana (CCV) has anything to say about it. The CCV's "love" is not on our side.

It's up to us to bring our council members to the realization that human rights are civil rights and they are non-negotiable. Some of South Bend's councilmen have continued to state they will not support an amendment unless more of their constituents ask them to do so. Start calling today and ask your representative to support an inclusive amendment to South Bend's Human Rights Ordinance:
