One of the big gay takeaways from Netroots Nation was the critical importance of defending marriage equality in Maine. The same team that brought us Prop 8 in California is now trying to strip away marriage from same-sex couples in Maine. The same consultants, the same national anti-gay organizations, the same Catholic Church.
Thank God the folks running the Protect Maine Equality have learned serious lessons from our loss in California and are not running the same old kind of campaign.
Take a look at this new television which features loving gay and straight couples from all across the state making clear that in Maine "we don't make one set of rules for some and another set of rules for others."
That ad shows gay and straight couples standing up for fairness and equality for all families. Even more powerful is the fact that their support for marriage equality is firmly situated within the progressive values that Mainers believe in.
As Bil pointed out last week, the Bilerico editorial team has set a goal of raising $5,000 from the Bilerico community to defend marriage in Maine. You can donate through the Bilerico Act Blue page to support marriage equality in Maine.
The anti-marriage forces have so far outraised Protect Maine Equality by 3 - 1 and with that fundraising advantage have hired one of the dirtiest anti-gay political operations in the country. Schubert Flint Public Affairs which ran the Yes on Prop 8 campaign which strip marriage away from same-sex couples in California are now set to run the same kind of divisive campaign they ran in California.
I have donated $50 through the Bilerico Protect Maine Equality Act Blue page. Will you join me?

Thanks, Michael (and Bil). Please keep pushing for Maine - day after day. I have been following the situation there from afar and was impressed and inspired by the courage the legislators and governor showed in passing/signing marriage equality legislation. Now it's time for our side to step up and make the necessary commitment to win one at the ballot box. Maine is going to be a huge momentum boost for the winning side.

The team running the No on 1 campaign is doing an amazing job. They are running a smart campaign that is spotlighting real Mainers.
Anti-gay Inc. sees this as an opportunity to stop our forward momentum on LGBT equality. We can't let them win.
