As bad as the old sexism was for women, it was no picnic for men either. What kinds of standards were they expected to live up to? And, in the same vein, what insecurities did advertisers prey on? Let's see...
Your dad was a hard-drinking, male-chauvinist poon-hound so man up and follow in his footsteps. Join the club. It's like Promise-Keepers but you get laid more. Damn right.

But first, build a little muscle. You've got no meat on your bones, you sissy.

The first one was hilarious and hard to believe that it ran. It seems rather risque for the times actually.
And I am naturally skinny!

Bil, don't worry, time will have a resolution for you being naturally skinny --- but maybe not the fix that you hoped for.
Remember all those personal ads that demand "You must be height/weight proportional"?
Well, I am now that --- I am about as wide as I am tall.

Eep, Janus, you are correct. I found it elsewhere (represented as vintage) but just dug around for the reall story:

Apparently, someone at CC thought it would be fun to use vintage images in a new campaign.
I think that makes me even angrier.

it sure looks older than 2007, janus...are you sure? it's easy to remember the advertising campaigns from when i was younger; hey back then there was no "gay" except as in "gay paree" or "gay nineties."
but wait, who would that CC ad have been directed at? 20-somethings? teens? i never saw one like that in my youth, but of course i never had the chance to see gay men represented in my youth either. i suppose that would have resulted in my recognizing who i was a lot earlier.
