Contemporary Christian singer Derek Webb has released a song that tells his fellow Christians in no uncertain terms to get their priorities straight. Lyrics for "What Matters More" after the jump.

Lyrics:

You say you always treat people like you like to be
I guess you love being hated for your sexuality
You love when people put words in your mouth
'Bout what you believe, make you sound like a freak

'Cause if you really believe what you say you believe
You wouldn't be so damn reckless with the words you speak
Wouldn't silently conceal when the liars speak
Denyin' all the dyin' of the remedy

Tell me, brother, what matters more to you?
Tell me, sister, what matters more to you?

If I can tell what's in your heart by what comes out of your mouth
Then it sure looks to me like being straight is all it's about
It looks like being hated for all the wrong things
Like chasin' the wind while the pendulum swings

'Cause we can talk and debate until we're blue in the face
About the language and tradition that he's comin' to save
Meanwhile we sit just like we don't give a shit
About 50,000 people who are dyin' today

Tell me, brother, what matters more to you?
Tell me, sister, what matters more to you?

Sadly, however, his record company has censored this song from his new record. It's not entirely clear it was censored for his support of LGBT persons, or the salty language, or a little bit of both. The uncensored version of the album is available from Webb's website (www.derekwebb.com), but the song is not available in shops, online retailers, or iTunes.

Sadly as someone who has worked in the christian music industry, most decisions are made on the same basis as any company. Will this song or book negatively effect sales? If it is thought to possibly alienate to large of the exiting or potential sales base, then knip tuck...it goes. Capitalism and pragmatism have no prophetic presence. It may be worse than outright censorship for it the company does not ability to really assess its motivation. No one person makes the decision...the business (which has no soul) speaks for the owners and managers. Of course I am being sarcastic but this is the disconnect many christian business people have who cater to a group of believers who may differ with them on certain issues. This is of course a hot potato (homosexuality that is)and no large company is willing to risk anything for truth to go forward if it involves the loss of sales.
