The life of a gay mobster is never easy. Former mafia hitman turned informant Robert
Mormando found that out the hard way this week. Mormando's lawyer argued in court earlier this week that he had left La Cosa Nostra for a peaceful working class life with his partner and should get a light sentence for his role in the shooting of a bagel store owner Gotti suspected of sleeping with his wife.
Sadly, the former mobster's court hearing date was leaked to the press even though safety concerns had kept the issue private before. Mormando is part of the witness protection program, but his partner isn't.
"He didn't want to make an announcement to the world," said one person with knowledge of the case who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the dangers facing Mr. Mormando. "He wanted the judge to know what risks he took - why he wasn't just your average cooperator, someone who had simply broken the code."
Mr. Mormando's hearing was, in fact, cloaked in secrecy, listed on the daily court calendar under the name "John Doe." The documents in his case are under seal and even Pacer, the online federal court archive, has been scrubbed clean of anything related to the matter.
"He's in an absolute state of fright," said the person with knowledge of the case. "You have to understand that his partner is totally freaking out. His partner has no connection to any of this. You can just imagine how fraught the whole thing is."
Even worse, Mormando was a close personal friend of the Gotti dynasty of Gambino family fame so now the mob hit man will have created, "an intolerable stain on their name." My God, I feel for his partner especially; I'd be a jittery twitching mess right now. Wouldn't you?

"Mormando is part of the witness protection program, but his partner isn't."
Add that benefit to the list.
Seriously - the poor guy must be looking over his shoulder every minute of the day.

Despicable. He's a dead man walking now, and all for some extra bucks.

Does the Defense of Marriage Act govern access to the witness protection program?

Ken and Kathy - the article doesn't mention anything about the partner not being eligible. From what I read it seemed more like they met after the mobster was put in the program so he didn't need to be protected like that. It didn't seem nefarious to me on first reading.

Whether this guy was "made" or not is questionable. He could have just been a crew member.
"Doublecrossed" by Giancana was written by the younger brother of Sam "Mooney" Giancana. A read of this book will give the uninitiated a valuable insight into the "macho" overtones of the Chicago mob. I have known Gay men in Chicago who were connected to "The Outfit" which is a title of another book worth reading though I cannot remember the author. In the Midwest it is no big deal and even such bar owners as Mr. Leather Chuck Renslow well know that.
Oh yes, if you patronize bath houses, bars and other "sleasy" establishments the mob is there for their share. As Al Capone said:
"I provide amusements people want."
In Chicago it is the "outfit" in New York it is "La cosa nostra."
