Sad news this morning from Out Word Bound bookstore as the 11 year old business announces it will be closing immediately after Christmas.
The closing of Indy's only LGBT bookstore is a huge loss for our community. It will leave a hole that Barnes and Nobles or Borders can't fill. Sadly, in this economy thousands of LGBT businesses are shutting down. As the LGBT community has become more mainstream, so have our shopping habits.
Remember when people used to complain that they couldn't find LGBT books in shops that weren't aimed at the gay community? When we wished we could be side by side with the self-help books and have our own category for our specialty titles?
That day has come. Now chain bookstores stock LGBT tomes - but usually in a small special section unlike the LGBT-specific stores that carried hundreds of titles. Be careful what you wish for.
Statement from Out Word Bound's owners, Tammara Tracy and Mary Byrne, after the jump.
Dear friends, old and new -
After 11 exciting years, Out Word Bound will be closing its doors. It has been a good run; we have learned so much; met so many good & fascinating people that have enlighten our lives. We thank you for sharing yourselves with us.
We are very thankful for your support - as customers, as volunteers, and as friends. We contemplated closing last year but thought we would give a little time to find someone or a group of people to take the bookstore over. Given the economic times, that did not pan out. Our personal lives are now at a juncture that we can no longer 'do the bookstore.'
As a final good will gesture, we are hoping that our grand closing sale helps your holiday season twinkle a little queerer, a little lighter and a little more literary!
Each week, the discounts get bigger. But don't wait too long because what you are waiting for may be gone.
This is also the "last call" for gift cards, consignments, & account balances, please redeem them as soon as possible.
On Dec. 26th, please join us one final time at the bookstore to share stories and a farewell toast.
