This morning the Indiana State Senate Judiciary Committee passed SJR-13,
the proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage and civil unions. The legislation passed on a vote of 6-4 party line vote with one Senator out of the chamber at the time of the vote.
The amendment is now eligible for a full vote on the Senate floor where it's expected to pass handily. The Indiana State Senate has an overwhelming majority of Republicans.
The amendment would still have to pass the Indiana State House of Representatives before it could move on to the next stage needed on the way to a public referendum, The amendment is expected to fail in that chamber. Democrats hold the majority in the Indiana House.
Vote break down after the jump.

I took some satisfaction. (:
As well you should, Don!
For those who don't know - our own Don Sherfick and Annette Gross of Bilerico-Indiana fame testified at this morning's hearing.
Gee Bil ya think they knew they had the votes ;(
Since they can't pass any meaningful legislature they need the property tax bill for this fall and the marriage discriminatin amendment in 2012 to rally their zombies to vote.
Party line? But, but, but Jamie Kirchick said gays have to appeal to Republicans! I'm sure if we just asked the Republicans nicely, they'd switch over.
I remember when I started blogging here, it was SJR-7 all the time. This post reminded me that I should do another one of those google maps posts that I haven't done in forever, because I don' think Indiana's our top state for readers anymore.
"I remember when I started blogging here, it was SJR-7 all the time."
Yeah, but then the guy who wrote most of that stuff switched to coverning the Larry-Craig-for-Vice-President campaign. All of us have to more on sometime. (:

So any meaning in Alting taking a powder during the vote?
