I dont know what quite happened between then and now, TTTT. I remember when I was in the Navy in the early-mid 70s, you would still find the same free-form attitude like the one above. Now it's all about "I'm more macho than you (thank you very much)", as though that rifle in your hand makes you a *real* man.
Actually, I saw a photo just a week or so ago like that from Iraq. Some soldier spelled out the word "dick," and for the k there was one guy bent over and the other right behind him.

Not true. I was enlisted just a few years ago and this type of horseplay is still prevalent.
