John McCain, who isn't liked by either Republicans or Democrats and will probably lose reelection either to a rightwing primary challenger or a Democrat after having lost the presidency last year, was on the Meet the Press to say that he doesn't want gays in the military.

It is frustrating to see that he has flopped on the issue, since I understood he'd previously said he'd adopt whatever stance the top brass wanted to take. It seems perhaps his bigotry is being exposed.

I do hesitate to call him a has-been simply because the nature of his Vietnam service, and what he went through for this country when he was a POW, entitles him IMHO greater respect than "has been" implies. Don't get me wrong, his service is not a free pass to bigotry, and I vehemently disagree with most of his politics.
