It was quite an honor to cap off my week of vacation in Los Angeles by winning the Stonewall Democratic Club's Bob Craig Media Award. The 35th Annual Stoney Awards drew quite the crowd from California Democrats Who's Who as the LA dems also honored Rep Jared Polis, Cleve Jones, Christine Pelosi, and T. Santora among others.

One of the most endearing Bob_Craig_Media_Award.jpgmoments of the night was receiving the award from presenter Karen Ocamb. Karen's not just the News Editor for LA's Frontiers magazine, she's also a fellow Bilerico Project contributor. That made it all the more sweet as two Projectors stood on stage for the award instead of just me. After all, I accepted on behalf of the entire Bilerico family.

That's what makes our site special. It's not about one person or viewpoint. Our site is meant to showcase multiple voices and perspectives. We don't always agree with each other, but we're all equal Bilerico family members. You don't always have to agree with what family members are doing or saying, but you love them nonetheless. It's the community we've built together that won the award; I was just lucky enough to get my name on the trophy.

I reference Lifetime Achievement Award winner Cleve Jones' acceptance speech in mine and I'll have it up as soon as possible. It was a barn-burner. I was supposed to give my short speech before Cleve and had a bunch of jokes lined up that wouldn't work if I went second, so most of my speech is impromptu.

Video after the jump.

If that was impromptu, no wonder Jerame pushes you up to the podium. Well said.

Okay, Grand Poobah, back to work.

Congratulations, Bil. You spoke very well!

If it wasn't for Karen I would have to eye roll this award. Karen is associated with Frontiers founded by Bob Craig but she is a great writer and does a lot of good work for the community..I love her. Not so much Bil.

Aw, I love you too, Charles. Glad to see you're still my #1 fan.

I am a fan. Nothing personal. Just that we have had many disagreements over same sex marriage a constitutional crusade for me . For several years you and Alex Blaze didn't think DOMA was an important issue and blasted me for my actions. Glad to see that you have recently changed your opinion.

Congrats on the award Bil.

Congrats Bil for a well-deserved award!

I'm letting you know how much I despise you!

It should've been ME getting pictures taking alongside the otherworldly Karen!

Do you have stalkerish shrines at home and make daily human sacrifices in her honor? I didn't think so!

Oh, and to hear Karen's voice; I've only seen one video with her in it, and that voice is to die for! Why wasn't I born a lesbian??!!

Terrific speech, Bil. And I love how you dealt with the east-coast/west/coast thing.

After all, as you point out, all the colors blend together. And where do the two coasts blend together? Indiana, of course.

Oh how true this is! One of the things I value most about Bilerico is the way some writers challenge my assumptions, or allow me to see a perspective I otherwise wouldn't have had the benefit of.

Dude!! Impromptu?? Great speech and great Cleve impersonation. Well done, Bil, and congratulations to Bilerico. Karen is pretty amazing too. As a member of that generation that was more than decimated by the plague, I often think of where we might be now if we hadn't had to lose so many and fight such an awful, bitter fight in the 80s and early 90s.

Bil, I could think of no one who deserves that Award more than you do, and the speech you gave just proves that point. Thank You for your efforts.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. TBP is more than a cult of personality and I love that about the site. I'm very proud that the site won a major award like this.

As we say in my ancestral tongue Gle Mhath! (very good)
Well done.
