Despite evidence to the contrary, Twitter is not the sole province of rabid Justin Bieber fans. It's also a fantastic way to stay up-to-date on LGBT news and to connect with advocacy organizations. And, #samesexsunday is a great way to meet new tweeps.

Here are ten LGBT advocacy groups that you should be following:

  1. Courage Campaign: @couragecampaign
  2. Freedom to Marry: @freedomtomarry
  3. GLAAD: @glaad
  4. Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund: @victoryfund
  5. GLSEN: @glsen
  6. GetEQUAL: @getequal
  7. Human Rights Campaign: @hrcbackstory
  8. National Center for Lesbian Rights: @nclrights
  9. National Center for Transgender Equality: @transequality
  10. National Gay and Lesbian Task Force: @thetaskforce

Of course, there are more LGBT groups on Twitter, list your favorites in the comment section.

Great suggestions Jon!

Thanks for the list and if any one wants im Caty_E over on Twitter.

sorry but as soon as I saw you included the HRC on the list, I stopped reading...oh and I threw up a little in my mouth.
HRC is as bad for gay rights as NOM is.
ughhh. Won't be back.

Agreed. "HRC on list? Commence tuning out."

Right, right. 3 letters will spoil the stew.

*rolls eyes*

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out if you're that sensitive. Grow up.

Perhaps they were suggesting accountability Bil.

HRC has yet to demonstrate that they are effective and worthy of our continued support, after +$550 million and 30 years.

There's also The Lesbian & Gay Foundation in the UK, who also tweet on international LGBT issues: @lgfoundation

Michael didn't say these were the "BEST" LGBT organization on Twitter. These are "Top 10 LGBT groups to follow on Twitter." Just because a lot of people follow an organization doesn't make them good. GLSEN and GLAAD have dropped the ball occasionally in the past. The reason HRC is on the list is because there are still a lot of G&L people who wear blinders.
