Lesbians around the nation wept (for joy) last night after People magazine broke the news that rocker Melissa Etheridge has left her wife, Tammy Lynn Michaels. Etheridge_split.jpgA mob of hopeful women broke into an impromptu version of "Come to my window!" outside of the singer's new bachelor pad.

"Melissa and Tammy Etheridge are saddened to announce that they are now separated," Melissa's rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.

The former couple add in a statement: "We ask for consideration and respect for our family as we go through this difficult period."

Asked for comment, Anne Heche told Bilerico Project that she hopes Tammy "meets a nice man who can take her up to heaven in his spaceship like I did."

Emphasizing the reaction of shallow individuals does no service to the great majority of Lesbians who take no delight in other people's misfortune. It reflects poorly upon us and plays into the Christian Right's portrayal of the communioty as a whole...

Great another fake lesbian power couple making us look bad in the media and to the right...I knew watching them on tv that one day this owuld happen..thanks for making us look like fools.

Thaks Rosie, Melissa, Anne...good job.

Since when does breaking up make a couple "fake lesbians?"

What are you trying to say here?

Great another fake lesbian power couple making us look bad in the media and to the right

Huh? So when a lesbian couple breaks up they're no longer lesbians?

I knew watching them on tv that one day this owuld happen..thanks for making us look like fools.

The fault lies with society judging all gay people based on what two people do.

I'm not happy they broke up. I never hope for couples to break up. That's weird and cynical.

Oh look, me and my girlfriend's 13th anniversary is exactly one month away today. According to the interwebs I'm supposed to buy her lace. uhhhhh shoelaces?

Remind me again why I should care. I've always been mystified by people who get wrapped up in the personal lives of celebrities.

I feel sad for any couple which breaks up, but all the more so for lesbian celebrities because of the extra attention and expectations which get dumped on them.

erm... and, I don't mean to criticize, because this is a wonderful site and I value it highly, but Bil what's up with the Anne Heche "quote"?

Bil, Bil, Bil, Bil, Bil (shaking head with a rueful grin).

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The only reason Alberto and I are still together is because Melissa and Tammy were! Beginning of the end!

The poor four kids. Two children with Tammy: boy/girl twins from an anonymous donor. From her previous relationship with Julie Cypher, Melissa Etheridge also has a son and daughter fathered by folk icon David Crosby (Crosby, Stills & Nash). Shakespeare in the Trailer Park.

Just so you know, the espresso did not feel pleasant jetting from my nose, nor did it do my keyboard any good whatsoever.

Haven't you heard, Judas? If a couple separates, all their children automatically go to prison to be tortured. Everyone knows that.

Note to the folks: showbiz couples don't have long shelf lives.
A hetero couple that I liked and met while working with the boyfriend just recently broke up.
They'd preferred to not marry, until gay couples had full equality.
They'd been together for a lot of years. Sometimes when BOTH in the relationship are performers, sometimes one has to defer their career (usually to help raise the kids).

In any case, I was sad to hear about Stuart Townsend and Charlize Theron, they are quite devoted straight allies and I would be about any couple that breaks up after a long time.

For gay and lesbian couples, of course, there is more scrutiny, and less support in the public eye.
But sad, nonetheless.
