Thanks to a reader who identified cover art on a vintage mag I blogged a while ago, I looked up the artist, George Quaintance (1902 - 1957), and was rewarded by finding two excellent collections of his art at georgequaintance.com and EroticArtCollection.com.

Quaintance's heroic-bodied men caught in casual moments of flirtation and romance are so sexy and sweet, they look almost innocent by modern standards. Two examples after the jump.

Well, not too innocent by modern standards.

Taschen published a huge retrospective collection of his work about eight or nine years ago; the man was definitely prolific as well as talented. And yeah, compared to, say, Tom of Finland or other illustrators who were getting their start in the 50s, he's definitely a wallflower. Still, solid composition and great colour work on top of the command of his subject matter.

ooh la la, I just love ancient grease!

I think I've been to the bathhouse in the first painting.
