We can learn from the various responses to Fred Phelps, of 'God Hates Fags' fame.

While many at first thought it best to starve Phelps of the media attention his group so craves, as they have widened their protests to include military funerals, and lately Synagogues, Jewish Community Centers and Women's organizations, there have been some impressive measured responses. And some of them have been empowering and wonderful.

One of the best responses I saw was a video of a frat house at the U. of Chicago. When Phelps' group showed up to protest something, the (mostly straight)frat boys blasted Diana Ross' "I'm coming out' and started dancing. The campus joined in. The video is below.

These responses bring allies together to stand up to hate, use humor, and drown out the hate while denying the haters the conflict that feeds their victimhood and media attention.

What nobody seems to notice is that these people who constantly make posters with that verse from Leviticus on them are inevitably and exclusively talking about MEN. I hope we all realize that this is nothing new. Conservative Christians have been calling for various forms of death penalty for lesbians and gay men at LEAST since Tim LaHaye of Left Behind fame published The Unhappy Gays in the 1970s. LaHaye believes in executing lesbians and gay men to serve as an example to others. Fun. Christian.
