You won't have Dr. Laura to kick around anymore

Last week I posted Dr. Laura's bizarre rant against a caller who asked how to deal with casual racism in her family. Stop-Whining-Start-Living-Dr-Laura-Schlessinger.jpgDr. Laura went from "You're probably hypersensitive" to "Black people ruin everything for white people like me!" in about 60 seconds, which, if anything, showed that the caller struck a nerve without even trying. She also said the word "nigger" eleven times, which got the "You can't tell if someone is racist unless you can read their mind" crowd to pay attention.

And now Dr. "Personal Responsibility Means Suck It Up, Assholes" is really mad at how everyone else is causing all the problems in her life so she's holding her breath until she turns blue ending her radio show when her contract runs out.

Dr. Schlessinger made the announcement on Tuesday night on "Larry King Live," saying she made a decision not to renew her contract when it expires at the end of the year and suggesting that she did not want her opinions and language, however provocative, to be muzzled.

"I want to regain my First Amendment rights," she said. "I want to be able to say what's on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors. I'm sort of done with that."

A normal human being would note:

  1. if she doesn't want to be "muzzled," then she shouldn't give up her radio show;
  2. the First Amendment doesn't include a "Deference to Dr. Laura" clause that prevents people from responding to what she says; and
  3. telling a woman she's hypersensitive because Barack Obama's presidency proves racism is over, saying the n-word to her eleven times, and telling her not to marry outside her race all before hanging up on her isn't "helpful and useful."

But we're not talking about a commoner who has to abide by the rules of logic and reason like the rest of us. This is Dr. Laura, who knows that Personal Responsibility is for peasants, not the lords and ladies like her.

It's interesting how she was willing to put up with being called homophobic back in 2000 when she was just calling homosexuality a "biological error." Calling her racist was just one step too far. I don't listen to Dr. Laura regularly, but I'm guessing that if she was able to deliver a rant like that that her racism had shined through in previous shows.

Who knew that was her weakness? Here's her announcing the end of her show on Larry King Live.

She does make a point about how opinionating in a medium that's fundamentally about selling things, not advancing reasonable discourse on important issues, can affect how free people feel to speak their minds (it's not a First Amendment issue, though), except I wonder if she would have gotten a job in the first place if the profit motive were entirely removed from corporate media and radio stations looked for real experts with meaningful things to say instead of controversial firebrands to get listeners riled up. That statement also makes me wonder just what terrible things she wants to say right now that she feels she's holding back.

...or what terrible things she's said that haven't been deemed "shockworthy", ahem, sorry, "newsworthy".

Y'know, if there's anything I've learned about commercial media during the time I've been trying to break in it's that no one has the right, First Amendment or otherwise, to a mainstream media platform or soapbox. It has to be earned, and earned continually by producing quality work that attracts and listeners/viewers/readers and therefore interest and sponsors.

Dr. Laura has abused her soapboxes and her audience repeatedly and so she has inspired many to seek to remove her from them successfully, twice. That's the way it works. When you're on a commercial media offering, you're not just representing yourself but also the media outlets you work for, the people who sign your paycheck.

Her affiliates don't care if Dr. Laura is a racist, but they certainly do care when she riles up listeners to public opposition and threatens their profits. Dr. Laura apparently forgot that and assumed she could say whatever she wants without question. Rush Limbaugh may be popular enough to be immune to that kind of thing but Dr. Laura most certainly is not.

I think it's interesting that she's adopting the Sarah Palin explanation that she's not quitting or retiring by giving up her radio show. 1984 black-is-white-speak is here.

I would love to proclaim "the wicked witch is dead"... but let's face it, a power mad narcissist like her will never leave the spotlight until absolutely forced to. I suspect Fox beckons. :-

Oh thank god, i'm not the only one who had that reaction (all the way from the initial 'yay' to the 'yea, she's not done. crap.')

I don't know which radio syndication group the contract she mentions is with, but hopefully they will be smart enough to let her out of it early.

This is pretty Sarah Palin, as Rory pointed out. She's shown she's a true believer now, so maybe she's going to be doing the rightwing speaking circuit.

The First Amendment does not grant you immunity to people reacting to what it does grant you the right to say.

I saw one episode of her short-lived TV show, and just that one was a traffic accident of massive proportions. I honestly dont think it got canned because of her politics (after all, she's no worse than some like coughcoughGlennBeckcough) but because it was so amazingly inept in its production approach. As she quickly learned, it's one thing to insult caller on a radio show; it's quite another when you have to do it to their face, and she never figured that out until it was waaaay too late.

I saw it once too. It was on at like 1am on a non-major network. And they still dropped her.

How do we know for sure that Dr. Laura isn't Mel Gibson in drag?

Eeeeewwwweee!!!

'Dr' Laura may have put up with being called a homophobe, but her sponsors did not. I co founded stopdrlaura with John Aravosis (AmericaBlog) and using both the combination of the web and demonstrations we helped organize in
over 40 cities 'Dr.' Laura lost her television show at Paramount. This cost Paramount tens of millons of dollars, and cost us $18,500 that we
raised by selling t-shirts which said "I am not
a biological error."
She may have 'quit' her radio show, but I am sure with this last episode, she lost a lot of sponsors. She is just trying to make it look good.

Oh Alex, stop trying to cheer me up.

I'm sure she'll pop back up again. Sarah Palin will need a running mate.
