Sometimes I find something that makes go ARGHHHH and this vintage girdle ad fits that bill. I think someone could write a dissertation on it: from the "joke" that women hate women who are more attractive than themselves (an attitude still encouraged in society), to the notion that a restrained female body is a beautiful one, to the weird phallic cannon pointed at her girdled figure.
