Margaret Cho makes DWTS even gayer

I had to laugh when I heard one of the judges say that "Dancing With the Stars has gone gay!" after Margaret Cho's well-intentioned but badly-executed samba in a rainbow dress to show support for LGBT bullied teens. Gone? I think it already was!

I worry that Cho's pro-LGBT statements and chatter will win her an automatic ticket to the "former contestants" line more than the atrocious dancing. It's the same reason most American Idol wannabes don't mention that they're queer; America doesn't tend to reward pro-LGBT activism of any sort.

What do you think? Will she continue on the show?

i think this is cho expressing the "if i'm going down, i'm going down in flames!" approach--and hey, if the dancing's that bad (i don't watch the show...), she's gone soon anyway, so why not make a statement?

of course, there is a slim possibility that she'll be helped by this, by potentially drawing wider attention to the fact that she's on the show and can get votes.

In its own way, DWTS is one of the most homophobic (and transphobic) shows on tv. Its erasure of the LGBTQ is offensive. I don't care if Margaret Cho is on or that she's wearing a rainbow dress. You want to represent the queer/trans communities, have same sex dance couples on the show, have Candis Cayne (for whom there was a big FB campaign to have on as a contestant... which was duly ignored) on the show. Really DWTS, go screw yourselves. That queer/trans communities make excuses for the show is sad in itself.

Hear hear. But they'll never allow a same-sex couple because the religious right would complain too much.

There's no doubt that DWTS is a homophobic show. But there's also no doubt that Cho is not the greatest dancer...and she knew it. I think she would have gone home this week with or without the rainbow samba.

Indeed, DWTS is not only homophobic -- it has become DWTR, Dancing With the Republicans. The growing trend of inclusion of one conservative policial figure in each starting lineup has become pretty obvious. This time they're gone over the top with the Palin thing. More about this in an upcoming blog of mine.

I don't watch this show at all, so I'm surprised to learn of all the politics behind it.

Margaret shows everything on her face. If she's tense, it shows; if she's off, it shows; she doesn't look like she's having a good time and that's a major part of selling the dance. In a dance competition, you're supposed to give the impression (just like Fred and Ginger did during the Great Depression) that you don't have a care in the world, life is easy, doing this dance is easy and you're having a great time.

When you're dancing you're selling a fantasy of painless romance to people. So far as I'm familiar with Cho's stand-up routines, that's not what she does regularly as a performer. As a comedian, she can let it all hang OUT, as a dancer, she can't.
