Katy Perry's newest song "Firework" has the gayosphere all atwitter because it shows two guys kissing; it's being called an ode to tolerance. Am I the only one who remember "Ur So Gay"'s wish that the effeminate guy would kill himself or "I Kissed a Girl"'s exploitation of lesbians to sell albums? Apparently not.

Hey, it also shows other youth empowering themselves--a young cancer patient, a girl with body issues. I thought it was pretty good. I don't see it as exploitation at all.

Expecting profundity from Katy Perry is like expecting War and Peace from a paperback romance novelist. All the same, the video shows that her packagers know what points to hit in order to make her work seem relevant and progressive. It's a plus, in a small way, that they are willing to show two guys kissing--and a large girl jump in a pool and a cancer patient step out, etc.

Never mind that I've been watching young emo guys kissing on youtube for the past 4 years. They are definitely following a trend, not leading one. The video is a marker of what is more acceptable now in the mainstream music market.

As for Perry, she's pretty to look at, the song has a good beat, and and the vid has nice eye candy. (I think the big girl is cute.) That doesn't make her an artist or a stalwart queer ally.

I hate this cunt.

Please remove her from the "Gay Icons" tag, because she is not one. She is a piece of shit.
