This story is a really a backgrounder for the new Sophia Coppola movie Somewhere in which the legendary Hollywood hotel is a kind of "character." But the Chateau Marmont has also served as the setting for a number of LGBT events, including a farewell memorial to the late Lance Loud, at which Rufus Wainwright sang "Over the Rainbow" accompanied on piano by his mother, the late Kate McGarrigle. I covered the event for TV Guide online but had difficulty keeping my "objectivity" since I heard Kate and her sister Anna when the folk singers were fresh from Canada in the early 70s singing at Cafe Lena's in Saratoga Springs, where I went to college. Kate was then in love with another folk singer who hung around there - Loudon Wainwright III - Rufus' father. Oh, and did I mention: Chateau Marmont is up the street from where I live in West Hollywood.
