The Pope & Condoms for Dogs

While PETA has often been criticized on Bilerico for their sexist, transphobic or fatphobic advertising stunts, I still like to lift up some of their PR campaigns just for the sheer originality of their ideas. They use sex to sell animal rights - a smart move in our culture. PopeCondom.JPGSometimes though, the unintentional can be as amusing as the ad itself. Take the recent ad I promoted last week of NFL star Chad Ochocinco naked to warn against buying furs - even though he's hiding his junk behind a pigskin football.

This latest ad though, featuring the Pope's new stance on condom usage juxtaposed against the pet overpopulation problem, hits the nail on the head.

Simply stated: It's sinful that millions of dogs and cats are killed every year in animal shelters simply because there aren't enough homes for all of them--and that millions more are abandoned on the streets, where they starve, die of untreated injuries or illnesses, or fall prey to animal abusers. The simple solution is to always spay and neuter animals instead of allowing them to produce countless offspring. Please help us bring salvation to dogs and cats by singing the praises of spaying and neutering to everyone you know.

For a group of people who claim to think animals deserve equal rights, they sure do call for things that would be a horrible violation of rights of a human. Coerced sterilization? Then again, Peta has not shown any concern for the groups of humans historically targeted for that specific cruelty, so wtf would they care.

Oh, PeTA. I love how they criticize animal shelters that kill their animals (horrible enough as it is) when PeTA also kills its shelter animals at its Virginia headquarters.

That said, all of my pets have always been spayed or neutered (with the exception of my two male rats, because they don't have the opportunity to impregnate any female rats when they're in a cage in my bedroom).

And this is why your rats can have domestic partnerships and civil unions, but not marriage licenses or at least that's the argument Charles Cooper would give.

What? A new papal encyclical regulating animal behavior? What gives Benedict XVI the right to tell non-Catholic pet-owners that every act of canine/kitty copulation must be open to the transmission of life? (Humane Vitae) And what's that little white think he's protecting his own little pinkies with in the photo?
