Like vultures swooping in to feast on the entrails of roadkill, Westboro Baptist Church has announced that they will be picketing outside of the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards. The estranged wife of vice presidential candidate (and presidential hopeful) news-graphics-2007-_447437a.jpgJohn Edwards passed away Tuesday. From the hate group's website:

This witch spent her life in defiance and disobedience to God, and blasphemed Him with her dying breath. She received multiple warnings and opportunties [sic] to repent... She called her dead 16-year-old brat "righteous" and said the Old Testament promises for God's people are lies. Her blasphemous words: "I had to think about a God who would not same my son...not only did he not protect him, the hand of God blew him from the road." If she had been a righteous woman, she would have said like Job, "the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away; blessed be the name of the Lord"... Her pride and arrogance is breath-taking! The last thing she would think to do is humble herself before the mighty hand of God. So, when Elizabeth woke in Hell on December 7th -- where she will reside for eternity -- her son, Wade, met her and began an eternity of cursing her for lying to him. Our message is for the living: do not live like Elizabeth Edwards or you will die like her and spend eternity in Hell where the worm never dies and the fire is never quenched.

I think I've got a pretty good idea who's going to be spending eternity rotting in hell and it's not going to be those that Westboro pickets. These disgusting vermin are the ones who will spend eternity cursing their parents for lying to them. At what point do you stop being outraged at their venom and feeling sorry for them for being brainwashed so thoroughly by their cult leader father? As for me, not yet. Close, but not yet.

Aww Bil don't be too harsh. Lets look at the good side of these people.

First, they really shine the spotlight on freedom of speech. I've never agreed with their positions but I will defend their right to say whatever they want to say.

Second, they show in startling ways just how influential family can be on children. I think this is good. It helps parents to reflect on their own effects on the ways they influence children.

Third, they certainly reflect certain mainstream values roaming the halls of the senate these days.

Fourth they probably assist Kansas to attract more tourists.

Fifth, I always enjoy comedy.

So, look at the bright side. God has a sense of humor.

I don't know why we even pay attention to these fools. I think we should just ignore them altogether. The more attention they are given, the more power they believe their words have, as if they actually have something meaningful to say. It's like a 3 year old child; the more attention you give to their whining, the more whining you'll get. Because it's ultimately about getting a reaction out of people, whether positive or negative. So, I say we give them the reaction they're worth: absolutely nothing.

I always shake my head at these people. Makes me wonder if they actually read the same book.

Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I [am] the Lord.

Leviticus 19:18

If one takes up the banner of faith be humble for you tread upon blasphemy. To presume the God's will and be consumed in zeal transgress' where you should not go.

As much as their actions shock and annoy me I feel pity for them. They are the ones who have truly lost their way.

All I can say about the responder who feels Elizabeth and her son are now in hell together is, "yuck, yuck, yuck.."

Why do these creatures not belive in evolution? The answer is simple but unusual and requires faith to understand. They cannot. In some weird warp of time, evolution has missed them completely, leaving them as unevolved, non-human creatures with primitive brains consisting only of brainstem for autonomic regulation and deep limbic structures to mediat fear, rage and for sexual pleasures. But they have undeveloped frontal lobes, leaving them with an inability to reason, or to think abstractly or conceptually, or for the executive cognitive functions that separate humans from more primitive life forms. Evolution requires the confluence over time of many forces--environmental, psychosocial and others--that create an adverse environment and those that adapt and are able to function at a higher level are selected over time to survive. It appears that many centuries ago, some were left in enclaves of protection from the evolving world. Surprisingly they survived. But manke no mistake about it. While they are a psychobiologic curiosity, they are venomous creatures that are a great threat to homo sapiens. Beware!
