I'm not going to speculate about this one, but this confirms American Community Survey data found in years past:

two-moms.jpgThe changes may seem surprising for a city where churches that have long condemned homosexuality remain a powerful force. But as demographers sift through recent data releases from the Census Bureau, they have found that Jacksonville is home to one of the biggest populations of gay parents in the country.

In addition, the data show, child rearing among same-sex couples is more common in the South than in any other region of the country, according to Gary Gates, a demographer at the University of California, Los Angeles. Gay couples in Southern states like Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas are more likely to be raising children than their counterparts on the West Coast, in New York and in New England.[...]

Black or Latino gay couples are twice as likely as whites to be raising children, according to Mr. Gates, who used data from a Census Bureau sampling known as the American Community Survey. They are also more likely than their white counterparts to be struggling economically.

It's important to remember that the common stereotypes about gay people are just that, stereotypes. The article also mentions that lots same-sex couples who have children had them from previous, heterosexual relationships, perhaps more than through adoption, artificial insemination, and surrogacy. They're often forgotten in discussions of gay parenting, even though the vast majority of queer people with kids that I know had them that way.

How much of that child-rearing statistic do you think comes about because of the closet? I'd guess that the vast majority of those are lesbian mothers with children born the good old fashioned way.

With poverty and poor education running rampant in minority communities and many southern states, does that contribute to the birth rate? Homophobia usually lives most safely in the uneducated and you could assume that the pressure to stay in the closet could lead to children as they try to have the relationship that their family/community tries to force them into.

I'm rambling, but do you follow me?
