I knew it was coming, but that didn't stop the tears when I read this e-mail from Betsie Gallardo's mother, Jessica Bussert:

This morning at about 10:00am, Betsie Gallardo Bussert passed away. She was surrounded by her parents and her siblings, and the room was simply filled with love. Over the past few weeks Betsie was able to visit with family and friends, walk on the beach, go out to a movie, go shopping, and attend church. She was free and happy and she was blessed in a thousand ways. When the time finally came she was at peace and out of pain. We held her hands and prayed with her up until the last.

A memorial Mass will be held at St. Agnes Church, Nashville Indiana, on Sunday February 6th at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please offer gifts directly to either of the two hospice services that provided so much care to Betsie and our family. Their contact information can be found below.

Sincerely,

My heart goes out to Jessica. She has lived through every mom's worst nightmare and did so with style and grace; at every moment Jessica demonstrated a mother's unending love for her child. I know that her love will keep Betsie's memory alive and I'm sure Betsie does too.

I know I'll never forget Betsie Gallardo.

Bil, thank you for giving me the gift of the pleasure to have been introduced to Jessica and her family. Jessica is not only a fierce advocate, but an amazing mother. Through Jessica, I was able to learn a great deal about her wife Sharon, and their children. For me they did not only defined family.

Betsie, may you rest in eternal peace.

Great inspiration eventually always subdues great pain and injustice. I'm glad Betsie and her family shared the graceful moment of her passing- it was, in my eyes, a triumph.
I see her smiling as I write this.

Betsy's late life was an inspiration to me and many folks in my prayer circle--and not a one of us knew her. That's power.

Her troubles also illuminated some pretty disgusting behavior within the government of the state of Florida. Those folks are paid with taxpayer dollars, and because Florida has no income tax, they rely on sales taxes. Thus, tens of millions of us who visit the state are direct supporters of that ridiculous conduct.

Which is why I wrote the governor. As a customer. To tell him to learn from this too-short life.

RIP, Betsy. Godspeed, to her family.

May she be sung to a gentle rest in the arms of her people.

I'm sorry to hear about her passing.
