This week's powerful SameSexSunday will knock you right over as we get to the heart of someThumbnail image for Same Sex Sunday truly meaty topics. First and foremost, we discussed the violent rhetoric and vitriolic discourse brought to light by the intense discussions following last week's tragic shootings in Tucson targeting Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

We begin with a fantastic one-on-one interview with the first and only African American female US Senator, former Ambassador to New Zealand, and Chicago mayoral candidate, Carol Moseley Braun. mlk02.jpgWe discuss why the Chicago mayoral race matters to LGBT America, her joy at the repeal of the law she fought against in 1993, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," as well as her hope for the repeal of another law she fought on the Senate floor in 1996, the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act." Finally, we had a very interesting discussion about the "coarsening of our public discourse across the board."

Then our round table continues the discussion, and wonders--on this Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday weekend--whether or not our own conversation within the LGBTQ community is adding to the problem. We also discuss what happened at the State Department this week regarding the immigration forms, the Department of Justice's continued defense of the "Defense of Marriage Act" in court, the Human Rights Campaign's marriage equality plea to President Obama, and state battles to watch and support.
