Hawaii's senate passed a civil unions law last night, which heads to a supportive governor now:
Throughout his campaign last fall, Abercrombie said he supported laws giving same-sex couples in civil unions the same rights, benefits, protections and responsibilities of spouses in a marriage.
The law goes beyond that and gives civil union benefits to opposite-sex couples as well. That's something I've blogged about before repeatedly: here in France, civil unions are open to people of any gender and there are almost 20 times more opposite-sex couples getting them than same-sex couples. Queer people, it turns out, aren't the only people in who see traditional one-man/one-woman-for-life marriage as something that's just not for them.
In short, the US is one step closer to becoming like the hated cheese-eaters today. Now if the US could also get out of Iraq....
