Justin Quinn, 33, of Fresno, California claimed Atlanta pitching coach Roger McDowell used homophobic slurs, RogerMcDowell.JPGmade sexual gestures, and threatened him with a baseball bat during practice before the April 23 game against the San Francisco Giants.

On Wednesday, Quinn held a news conference with famed attorney Gloria Allred in Los Angeles. Allred said Quinn heard McDowell say: "Are you guys a homo couple or a threesome?" The coach apparently then used the bat in a manner "simulating sex." The coach then alleged threatened Quinn with the bat: "How much are your teeth worth?" Quinn was attending the game with his wife and 9-year-old twin daughters at AT&T Park in San Francisco when the incident occurred.

GLAAD also jumped on the incident and reported Thursday that McDowell issued an apology late Wednesday: "I am deeply sorry that I responded to the heckling fans in San Francisco on Saturday. I apologize to everyone for my actions." GLAAD wants disciplinary actions.

Video after the jump.

Why is it that these guys are always soooooo sorry after the fact, but unless someone holds their feet to the fire they aren't?

Maybe it's because our society teaches, promotes and rewards behavior like that? Unless it's confronted with financial consequences. That "coach" should be reassigned to cleaning toilets for the next 5 years and jail time for communicating a threat. Both he and the team and should be fined and barred from playing for the entire season. Maybe then next time the team will hire someone with more sense.

There've been a few of these lately. It seems like the sports world is catching up with the real world.
