Jen Grygiel, a lesbian who was bullied during the time she attended Mt. Markham High School (class of '97) in West Winfield, New York, recently was inspired by the Back to Your School program to write to the principals in the school district and offer to speak to students. She noted in her letter, "There is still a very high suicide rate amongst LGBT youth, as we've seen in recent weeks across the country. I know that I would have appreciated hearing from LGBT alumni when I was attending Mount Markham. I honestly think it would be helpful for LGBT students and also for students who are not LGBT (it might help reduce bullying etc.)."
She received no response from the administrators.
However, in the spirit of the It Gets Better Project, Grygiel posted her message to Mt. Markham students online and is hoping they'll find it. Let's help them do so. If you know someone there, in the area, or just someone who you think can get the message a step closer than you can, pass it along.
