"We believe that more and more Christians are examining the issue and realizing that it is truly a civil rights issue and that members of our denomination are just as deserving of support of their church communities and their commitments to each other. It's an idea whose time has come."

-- Ann Birkel, head of Washington DC's Foundry United Methodist church advocacy team on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues, after the Baltimore-Washington Conference narrowly approved a same-sex marriage resolution Saturday. The measure would allow clergy to perform marriage and civil unions ceremonies for gay and lesbian couples in areas where the rites are legal, but requires approval of the nationwide General Assembly before going into effect.
