Congratulations to Indianapolis activist Zach Adamson on winning yesterday's primary race to be one of four official Democrat candidates for the Indianapolis City-County Council. Many of you know Zach from the comments section of Bilerico; he was one of our first readers - before Alex joined the blog even!

Zach has always been an incredible force in Indianapolis democratic politics. He's put in countless hours working on other campaigns, supporting many different progressive causes, and working to better the eastside of Indianapolis especially. I couldn't be prouder of him. He's making the hometown a better place already, but he'll get the chance to make real change if he's sitting on the governing body for the state's largest city.

While Indiana has technically had an openly gay elected official before, it's never been higher than the level of school board. Zach would be the first elected politician to buck Indiana's notoriously anti-gay political establishment of both stripes if he's elected as a council member in November.

Zach is a member of the Stonewall Democrats and has been endorsed by the Victory Fund. You can donate to Zach's campaign here or like his campaign on Facebook.

Good luck in the campaign, Zach! Congratulations from the staff and contributors at Bilerico!

When I first met Zach, I knew he would be a wonderful politician. He has the passion for it! I'm so glad he's on his way!

I remember meeting him a few years back. A real Hoosier.

Good for him for getting involved in politics.

He'll do great things.

Putting your name on a ballot takes courage--people take potshots, and he'll soon be the King of Potholes.

It goes with the territory.

Neighborhood activism ought to be required training for council members. Too many forget too quickly, that a city is nothing more than a collection of neighborhoods. Zach will bring that knowledge and experience to the council, which is badly needed.

Its a start but we have a very long road ahead of us. Still its worthy of support and praise.

Actually, there have been two openly gay township trustees. Mike Hobbs in Lawrence Township (Marion Co.) and Terry Michael in Fall Creek Township (Hamilton Co.)

Thanks Gary! Were either of them out when they ran though? I thought neither of them would confirm or deny until after the election(s).
