GetEqual_Scavenger.jpgThe annual White House LGBT Pride Month Reception is happening today, and President Obama has invited many community leaders to the White House to participate. GetEqual is using the opportunity to ask participants to "Get Bold," and to ask the President about LGBT rights. They are distributing "Scavenger Hunt" cards outside the White House gates to suggest that participants play a different game than just the same old DC Shuffle.

Get Equal DC volunteer Charles Butler told Metro Weekly, "We will be waiting outside the security entrance to distribute these cards to the reception attendees who will then, ideally, will take them inside."

Butler noted, "[W]e are there to help embolden these community leaders to speak up once they are inside. ... [W]e're not asking anyone to do anything risky or dangerous or even flashy. We just want them to speak up."

GetEQUAL DC members created this "GetBOLD to GetEQUAL Scavenger Hunt" to provide the invitation-only Pride Month Reception attendees an opportunity to communicate the needs of the LGBT community to the power players inside. The scavenger hunt will ask attendees of the reception to "GetBOLD" by urging President Obama to be the fierce advocate he promised the community during his campaign. The game is meant to be a fun but meaningful opportunity for attendees to step up the pressure on the Obama administration for full LGBT equality.

The scavenger hunt game cards include challenges for the attendees to complete at the reception, including "Get Obama to announce the date for the certification of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' repeal" and "Take a picture of Obama holding a sign that says 'I support trans-inclusive ENDA,'" among others.

GetEQUAL DC Urges President Obama
and White House Pride Reception Attendees to GetBOLD

WASHINGTON, DC -- On Wednesday, activists from GetEQUAL DC will greet invitees to the White House Pride reception with a simple request -- to help lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans become fully equal under the law. Following the president's uninspired speech last Thursday to LGBT donors in New York City, GetEQUAL DC will meet reception attendees with signs reading, "Obama: GetBOLD -- FULL LGBT EQUAL RIGHTS NOW!" and "President Obama: Evolve Already!"

Last week GetEQUAL partnered with AMERICABlogGay to launch the Twitter hashtag #EvolveAlready in order to put pressure on the President and the Administration to "evolve" and embrace marriage equality. This week GetEQUAL is launching #GetBOLD to call on the LGBT community and our elected officials to become bolder in asking for full federal equality for LGBT Americans.

GetEQUAL DC members have also created a "GetBOLD to GetEQUAL Scavenger Hunt" to provide the invitation-only Pride Month Reception attendees an opportunity to communicate the needs of the LGBT community to the power players inside.

"Although President Obama has made strides toward LGBT equality, he has not come out as a strong enough ally for our basic civil rights. Bi-national same-sex couples are still being torn apart by deportations, our lesbian and gay soldiers are still being discharged from the military, President Obama has still failed to provide non-discrimination protections within the military based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and his stance on marriage equality as 'evolving' is unacceptable," said Janelle Mungo, GetEQUAL DC organizer. "These are basic human rights where Obama can take action, but the President has failed to exercise desperately-needed leadership while denying basic civil liberties to an entire population of Americans."

For those whose White House Pride Month Reception invitation was "lost in the mail," GetEQUAL DC will be holding its own Pride Month Reception on Wednesday, June 29, at 6:30pm at The Green Lantern, a local DC gay bar. Of course, the White House Reception attendees are welcome, and those who complete five of the tasks as outlined on the game card are invited to collect their free drink prize. More information about the event can be found here.

I wonder how many of the invitees will Get Bold so we can Get EQUAL?
I think this is an excellent example of creative non violent civil disobedience. I am a supporter of our POTUS, but I too want him to evolve already.
