GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney has declined to sign on to a religious right-sponsored anti-gay statement, Jefferson-pledge.jpgcalling it "undignified." Two candidates have already signed on, but others, like Romney, are balking.

Two of Romney's rivals for the Republican nomination, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, have signed the The Family Leader's 14-point pledge, which calls on the candidates to denounce same-sex marriage rights, pornography, same-sex military accommodations and forms of Islamic law.

When it was first circulated last week, the introduction to the pledge stated that African American children were more likely to be raised in two-parent households when they were born into slavery than they are today. The group struck that language and apologized after black ministers complained, but it said it stands by the rest of the document.

Andrea Saul, a spokeswoman for Romney, told The Associated Press in a written statement Tuesday that Romney "strongly supports traditional marriage," but that the oath "contained references and provisions that were undignified and inappropriate for a presidential campaign."

Another GOP candidate, former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, has also refused to sign the pledge. In a written statement about his decision not to sign on, Johnson said, "Government should not be involved in the bedrooms of consenting adults. I have always been a strong advocate of liberty and freedom from unnecessary government intervention into our lives."

There is a catch-22 for him that Lawrence O'Donnell pointed out regarding this pledge. In fact, it seems to be written just for Romney.

Central to the pledge is to disavow poly relationships and polygamy, and digs into questions of Romney's parentage. There is no way he could sign it.

Regardless of the resons they give publicly or how we may disagree with them on other issues, the LGBT political world should applaud Romney and Johnson for leading the charge in refusing this anti-liberty and pro-Christianist pledge. Hopefully, other candidates will now have two courageous precedents (and pre-composed justifications) for rejecting this perniciously un-American pledge.

Romney, while Gov. of Massachusetts, used a antiquated and hateful 1913 "RACISTS" law, originally intended to stop interracial marriages, to prevent many out of state gay couples from being able to marry in Massachusetts,(if it would be illegal for them to marry in their home state as WAS the case with interracial couples seeking marriage back when the law was conceived in 1913). This man is a disgusting asshole and I would not give him the time of day. We must never forget the scumbags (Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, George Bush, just to name a few) who have deliberately and purposefully stood in the way of the equal rights for LGBT individuals! Romney is near the top of that list! [I also will not forgive him for putting his poor Golden Retriever in a crate on TOP of the families station wagon when they moved to Massachusetts - he later had to spray the dog and crate which was covered with crap because this poor animal lost his bowels from the TERROR of being up there! Such cruelty is a bad sign in any human being]!
