Teonna Monae Brown, the woman who attacked a transgender McDonalds patron in a Baltimore suburb, has pled guilty McDonaldsto one count of first-degree assault and a hate crime charge. Prosecutors are asking for a sentence of five years in prison for the attack.

The April attack brought attention nationwide to the plight of transgender people, with thousands signing online petitions and holding rallies.
...
The girl who was charged as a juvenile in the same attack admitted her role in juvenile court on July 1 and was committed to a locked facility, Shellenberger said.

We were one of the first outlets to post video of the attack and identify the victim as a transgender woman. It became one of our most visited posts in Bilerico history, but also has the dubious distinction of also having the most TOS-violating comments of any post.

There were so many sickeningly racist comments left on that post that it made my heart melt to read them. I've never seen as much ugliness on the blog as the post on that attack inspired. It serves as an important reminder that we all have our own phobias and stereotypes to work on while we call out others for their own prejudices. Attitudes like the ones shown in quite a few of those comments are what leads to attacks like this.

That was not a very good plea. Wonder if her lawyer made clear the implications of pleading guilty to a hate-crime charge.

She has now admitted to and will be labeled a violent bigot the rest of her life, should have only pleaded on the assault charge.

Geena - a bigot is a bigot. She deserves that label after what she did. Plus, I'm so tired of these people who discriminate against other people whining when you call them on it. They actually get insulted when you call them bigots. Give me a break! Who is the "victim" here? Geez!!!!

Well, she didn't plead guilty to being a bigot. There's no law against that.

Here's the plea agreement in State of Maryland vs. Teonna Brown:

In reading the plea agreement, I appreciate that the author came across as respectful of Chrissy, and used female pronouns throughout.

Given the nature of the assault, with blows to the head while Chrissy was down, even five years seems rather light. And pleading guilty to a hate crime seems reasonable as this is pretty clearly what it was, an unprovoked attack based on an individual's perceived gender. I don't see how either of the defendants could have dodged that one.
