Looks like lesbian celebrity couple Melissa Etheridge and Tammy Lynn Michaels break-up isn't going so well. According to TMZ, the couple are currently arguing through lawyers about child custody and visitation, child and spousal support, the division of their property, and attorney's fees. In other words, they're squabbling the same as any heterosexual married couple.
There's one twist though. Etheridge is trying to claim the two were never actually married and, therefore, she's not responsible for quite a few of the claims. You don't see that often in a straight marriage, do you? The legal limbo of same-sex relationships strikes again!
Melissa and Tammy are even arguing over whether they were actually married. Tammy says they were (which would entitle her to all sorts of financial goodies) while Melissa says their vows were nothing more than a non-binding commitment ceremony.
In a news story shortly after Prop 8 passed, Etheridge explains that she and Tammy didn't get married in California while they could because they were worried marriage would be banned again in the state (obviously, it was). She told the reporter, "My wife and I consider ourselves to be married, we would like that to be recognized some day civically."
I wonder how that's going to fly with the judge.
