Troy Davis is scheduled to be executed any minute. I asked the White House whether the President planned to intercede. Some speculated he could pause the execution by requesting a federal investigation. Others hoped the President would use this opportunity to speak about racial injustice within the criminal "justice" system.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney responded:
"Dating back to his time in the Illinois State Senate, President Obama has worked to ensure accuracy and fairness in the criminal justice system - especially in capital punishment cases. However, it is not appropriate for the President of the United States to weigh in on specific cases like this one, which is a state prosecution."
Sadly, the only hope is left with the Supreme Court of the United States. Let's hope they halt the execution of an innocent man.
UPDATE 9:17 PM PST: Troy Davis was denied a stay of execution by the United States Supreme Court. The State of Georgia executed Troy Davis at 11:08 PM EST on September 21. Davis's last words were, "May God bless your souls."
