A married lesbian couple has been denied new drivers licenses with their new hyphenated last names. The state says the two have to provide more documentation than normal. (Hat tip to Jezebel)

I looked at the FL DHSMV website and they were actually missing "Primary Identification," which would be a passport, birth certificate, or naturalization papers. They had their marriage license for the name change and updated social security cards for proof of social security, but no primary identification.

I'm not sure why the spokesperson (paraphrased by the newsanchor) said gay couples need "additional documents" when they listed the same exact documents a married straight couple would need.

Anyway, the employee was obviously being discriminatory and obstructionist anyway by telling them their marriage license wasn't recognized and not telling them what they were actually missing.

My bad. What this video doesn't completely fails to mention is that Florida doesn't recognize out-of-state same-sex marriages at all. So they do need a court order to legally change their name.

Ann Howard, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, said: “The out-of-state marriage certificate is a piece of paper that means nothing to the state of Florida. That is correct.”
