Last weekend I had the honor of hosting the 3rd Annual Haas Convening of LGBT Bloggers & Editors sponsored by the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association. This year the event was held it in Houston, Texas, and since we were focusing on election year politics, who better to start off the weekend than openly lesbian Mayor Annise Parker?
The mayor had a Q&A with the journalists at our opening dinner. While she spoke and kindly answered questions for almost an hour, Miami Herald writer Steve Rothaus has posted some video from the event.
You can watch as Mayor Parker welcomes attendees, talks about the Trayvon Martin killing, and then answers my question about the just launched "Mayors for the Freedom to Marry" campaign. I asked her whether or not the prestigious group of leaders are jumping the gun a bit by focusing on marriage equality instead of a push for federal employment, housing, and public accommodations protections for LGBT people.
