Rufus-Poster.jpgRufus Wainwright has a new album out May 1. Out of the Game is Wainwright's seventh studio album, and the title of the first video and single released from the new work.

If you missed the video staring Helena Bonham Carter as a stripping librarian, I highly encourage a watch.

If you can't wait until May 1, luckily NPR Music is giving a first listen to the full album from now until it's release. I've yet to make it all the way through, but so far so good.

My history with Rufus is full of great memories. I first discovered him by his single track on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, "Complainte de la Butte." I was obsessed with the movie and the soundtrack (as every good 17 year old boy should) and would soon be enthralled with this gay man.

I was still coming out to myself, so in many ways, Rufus became my soundtrack.

Want One was released as I was starting college. It was one of the first purchases I made after my mom and grandma helped me move in to the dorms (the other being the first two seasons of Queer as Folk).

It is still one of my favorite albums, and I was very happy to introduce him to my friends.

My first time seeing Rufus live involved a long drive to Oklahoma, a rained out show, and an awesome indoor relocation. He was playing with Ben Folds, and it is still one of the greatest nights of music I have experienced.

My second time seeing Rufus was in December 2007 at the 9:30 Club in DC. My partner David bought the tickets for my birthday because he was one of my favorite artists - even if David had never been a fan. It was just Rufus and his piano, and he won David over that night. We managed to get right up to the stage, and I am pretty sure we both cried when he sang "Hallelujah" in the encore. I still have the poster on my wall (see above) and rank it as my top show at the Club.

But it is my next memory from my life with Rufus that is my favorite to tell.

A couple summers ago, Rufus was doing a show at one of DC's music venues, and my partner David received a call from a straight friend: "Where does one find hardcore gay porn magazines? I need them for Rufus Wainwright."

Seems Rufus likes to have some reading material in his dressing room, and our friend was in charge of fulfilling his needs. We racked our brains as the friend drove over to pick us and another friend up to search the nations capital for just the right copy of some glossy print man-on-man action. But seriously - where can you actually find printed porn anymore?

Gay bookstore? Nope. Just some mild erotica.

Straight porn store? Nope. Don't they know they are missing out on a HUGE market here?

Finally we went to the leather gear store - which probably would have been the smartest choice to begin with, but even there our options were limited to a few months backlog of the same publication. Print really is dead.

I took charge of deciding what would best tickle Rufus's fancy - seeing as we had the longest relationship. I finally settled on two copies: one had a nice fisting scene, and the other had a scene evolving a creative nailing with a cross - perfect.

We purchased and ran into a straight friend on our way out. His look of horror caused by being discovered going into a gay leather store really made the evening even better.

Whether this part is true, I was not there to verify, but when my friend gave Rufus the magazines, he told him, "My friend Jim said you would like these." And he responded, "I do."
