When I was sent this new celebrity filled, animated airplane safety video from Air New Zealand and was told that Obama's evolution on marriage equality was featured, I was left scratching my head. What does the LGBT community's fight for equal rights have to do with airplane safety?
The way they go about it makes it look like a big joke. It is only a few seconds, but during the explanation of the oxygen masks, we see a sketch of world leaders putting on their masks - except for President Obama because he is busy being served a rainbow flag colored cocktail - because nothing is gayer than rainbows and liquor.
I'm not sure what they were going for - though they are selling this as a positive thing - but it comes across as if they are making fun of Obama for his support and saying that supporting gay rights in general is funny. It's as if they are saying, "Hahaha, hehehe - you like gay people."
I don't think this was Air New Zealand's intention - it feels more like they were attempting to pander to the gays but failed miserably. How about you show some gay people rather than the president if you want to reach out to our community?
Am I being overly sensitive here? Maybe this is a cultural difference and they just don't completely understand American politics. Maybe I am just having a bad day. Check out the video after the jump and let me know what you think.
