Lesbian-Teens-shot.jpgVigils are being organized around the country in response to the shooting of a lesbian couple on Saturday night in Portland, Texas. Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Christine Chapa, 18, were found in a Portland park with gunshot wounds to the head, Portland Police Chief Randy Wright told the Corpus Christi Caller Times. Olgin was pronounced dead at the scene; Chapa is in serious but stable condition after surgery, according kristv.com. The loving couple had been together for five months, according to friends (see video after the jump).

No arrests have been made. But Wright told MSNBC.com that the girls' sexual orientation is being considered a factor in the investigation. "That's always something that we're looking for, but as of this point, we have not been able to establish that that had anything to do with the attack." However, Wright also said that while they do not have enough information to identify a third party suspect, he thinks "this was not just a random attack." He told MSNBC.com that a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun had been recovered at the scene, but they were still looking for the weapon.

Meanwhile, Cleve Jones put out a call via Facebook asking people to organize vigils honoring the young women:

Whoever shot Mary Christine Chapa and Mollie Judith Olgin, whatever the motive, regardless of where it happened, two beautiful girls were shot and one was killed. We need to honor the memory of Mollie and pray for the recovery of Mary.

Please, take some time to organize public vigils for Mollie and Mary in your communities this week. Let me know the locations and times and I will post them here.

Mary and Mollie loved each other. Now we need to show our love for them and their families and friends.

Please share this and organize vigils in your home towns.
