My publication, Frontiers Magazine, was honored for outstanding contributions to the LGBT community during the launch of LGBT Heritage Month at Los Angeles City Hall on June 1. Introductions were made by openly gay LA City Councilmember Bill Rosendahl and longtime LGBT ally Councilmember Paul Koretz with Frontiers publishers Mark Hundahl, David Stern and me, Frontiers news editor, saying a few words. Honestly, I have been hesitant to post the video - shot by my friends Renee Sotile & Mary Jo Godges of Traipsing Thru Films - because I was so under-dressed for the occasion. I had been working at home on a couple of stories when I had a forehead-slapping "Oh, No!" moment and dashed out to get downtown. But now - as I'm working on a piece about the progressive blogger Netroots Nation - it occurs to me that my personal embarrassment is ridiculous in the context of acknowledging LGBT history and Frontiers' place in it. On June 24, I will be 32 years clean and sober (thanks to the CBS News Employee Assistance Program) - you'd think I'd be over myself by now. So a big belated THANK YOU to Bill Rosendahl, Paul Koretz and the City of Los Angeles for honoring Frontiers and the part I've been privileged to play in recording our LGBT history as it happens.
