And what better song than "Part of Your World" from Disney's The Little Mermaid - the first movie I can remember seeing in theaters (I was born in 1984 - the movie came out in 1989). Since then, I have yet to meet any gay men - and mostly everyone else from my generation - that do not have this song memorized.
It is a story of escape - the desire to be some one you are not. I think all of humanity can relate to that. For me, I always wanted to escape my hometown - something that took almost 14 years to accomplish post my first encounter with that submerged redhead. Being gay played a huge part in that.
I wanted to be part of that word where I could be me - not half fish - not half hidden. If it took cutting a deal with an angry drag queen, I would. It was a life lesson we all must learn sooner or later.
As far as my favorites of the YouTube versions I could find, the movie and Broadway versions are the "best," but Jessica Simpson's version is actually not that bad.
I'll give fair warning that the Miley Cyrus version was cringe inducing, but I thought she deserved a chance.
Darren Criss turns the song into something completely different, and I LOVE his non-Blaine hair (are we sure he is straight?).
Miss Coco Peru's cover has a special place in my heart because I saw her sing this live when she did a show on my college campus. I love it if only for the line, "Sure - that bitch has everything."
As usual, let me know who you think did it best. If I missed anyone, give us the link in the comments.
Stay dry and let the sing-off begin.
