On Monday, Duncan Hosie, a gay Princeton student, challenged US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia on the rhetoric he's used comparing homosexuality to murder and bestiality in his past dissents. Scalia responded by saying, "If we cannot have moral feelings against homosexuality, can we have it against murder? Can we have it against other things?"
Hosie said Scalia's response was absurd.
"in the sense that, you know, there is really no comparison between intimate homosexual couples trying to have intimate relationships and people murdering others or people engaging in bestiality and incest. And he really didn't defend those comparisons at the level that I think he needed to because of just the destructive and inflammatory nature of those comments. I wish he had.....[His views] are becoming increasingly out of the mainstream."
In an interview with MSNBC's openly gay and married anchor Thomas Roberts Wednesday morning, famed Star Trek actor and author George Takei talked about the "evolution" of Donald Trump on marriage equality and then talked about his belief that Scalia is "biased" and should recuse himself from deciding the upcoming DOMA and Prop 8 cases:
Well, it seems to me that if Justice Elena Kagan can recuse herself from the Boston case, Justice Scalia needs to consider recusing himself. He is obviously not unbiased. He is clearly biased in this situation. So how can he look at the issue and make a judgment fairly. I really do think - First of all, that statement was a repugnant statement to equate homosexuality with murder. And any Justice who has so little thought before he speaks, should not be participating in ruling on the cases involving DOMA or Proposition 8. I'm not a lawyer.
