Let's Have a Convening!

Every year I host a gathering of the nation's top LGBT media professionals for a weekend to discuss LGBT-relevant issues to better inform our reporting. This year's convening will be held in Philadelphia from Friday, February 22 thru Sunday, February 24.

The topic this year will be "Coalition Building." We plan on stepping outside of the usual boundaries of LGBT reporting - marriage and employment protections - to examine how "our" issues intersect with other minority groups and how we can all support each other.

While I love hosting this important gathering, it's also very time consuming and sometimes getting a bunch of journalists to concentrate long enough to give me the required information to book flights, arrange hotel rooms, etc is like herding cats. It reminds me of the subway pushers they use during rush hour in Japan.

Since I'll be busy putting all of this together over the next month, I've decided to skip our usual way of scheduling multiple posts all day long and pushing contributors to give us more, more, more! Instead, I'll write when I have time and on the topics I find interesting (hopefully more longform journalism) and as contributors feel the urge, we'll get their posts up too. It might be less content, but it'll be better content.

Here's to 2013 and all the changes we need to become better. I'm doing my part for the journalists who focus on our issues. What are you doing to make change in your surroundings?
