Fringe anti-Obama extremist and all-out gun nut Ted Nugent has been invited by Republican Texas Representative Steve Stockman to be his guest at tonight's State of the Union Address.

In a press release issued yesterday announcing the invitation, Stockman -- who last month threatened to file articles of impeachment against the President if he moves forward with plans to reform the nation's lax gun laws -- said he was "excited" to have Nugent join him in the House chamber, calling him a "patriot." Stockman no doubt intended the invitation to serve as a challenge to President Obama, who is expected to focus on gun reform in his speech.

But I wouldn't call it a challenge so much as a security threat. After all, Ted Nugent has a long history of making vile and inflammatory remarks directed at Democratic leaders, including threats against the lives of Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and President Obama himself. He once infamously boasted about telling the President of the United States to "suck on [his] machine gun."

Nugent, a member of the NRA Board, warned in comments delivered at the group's national convention last year that if President Obama were re-elected, he "will either be dead or in jail by this time next year."

AMERICAblog's John Aravosis notes that this direct threat against the life of the President of the United States instigated a Secret Service investigation. Aravosis also includes in his article a handy list of some more of Nugent's most repugnant remarks:

In the past Ted Nugent has said of President Obama that he is "evil," "hates America" and is a "piece of sh*t."

Nugent has called former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "a toxic cun*," a "two-bit wh*re," and a"worthless b*tch. . ."

Nugent also called Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) a "worthless wh*re. . ."

Nugent also said last year that he wondered if it would have been better had the South won the Civil War.

Apparently, in today's Republican Party, making a credible threat to end the life of the President of the United States is rewarded with an invitation to sit in a room with said President of the United States as he delivers the single most consequential political speech of the year. The phrase "unworthy of the honor" doesn't even begin to describe how truly disgusting Rep. Stockman's invitation to Ted Nugent is. It does say a lot about the gutter in which today's GOP lives, though.

Here's hoping the Secret Service doesn't allow Nugent -- a loathsome extremist and threat to national security -- the dignity of being seated in the House chamber tonight.
