I haven't watched "American Idol" yet this season - but my email lit up after the East Coast saw this performance by "gentle soul" Charlie Askew. Watching it when the show aired here, I could see why: yes, sometime contestants get emotional when the judges don't like a performance - but this was unnervingly different, deeper.
Charlie seemed to fall apart on the inside - telling host Ryan Seacrest that the reason he smiles so much is "because I think I have to." I know what that feels like. Luckily, Seacrest told him he has friends on the show - who I hope were waiting in the wings to give the kid hugs and much support - support that I hope continues if he doesn't make the cut.
