While the Catholic Cardinals may have elected Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina as the new Pope yesterday, many Angelinos were angry that Cardinal Roger Mahony was among those voting given his link to the LA pedophile priest scandal. On Tuesday, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles agreed to pay $9.9 million to four men who say they were molested by parish priest Michael Baker, who is accused of molesting at least 23 boys over three decades.

The LA Times notes that recently released internal documents indicate that Baker told Mahoney about his abuse of two boys in 1986. Mahoney sent Baker away for "treatment" but then welcomed him back - after which he molested again. Baker was subsequently sent to prison in 2007 for abusing two boys.
