Now that Managing Editor John Becker and his husband, Michael Knaapen, have moved to DC, Jerame and I are lucky enough to hang out with them on a regular basis. Since we're all geeks, the topic of conversation has turned to languages more than once and we've regularly made the joke that anything sweet sounding can be turned into a curse or harsh rebuke in German (or Russian). The language just sounds brutal and ugly compared to the more gliding Romance languages or the melodic sounds of most Asian languages.
Now, someone has come up with a video comparing words pronounced in German versus other languages. The differences are striking.
(Of course, it goes without saying that this is a comparison of how German sounds to English speakers. It has nothing to do with German culture or people. It's about noises used to communicate. No lid-flipping needed from our more sensitive readers.)
