On a recent evening in Providence, Rhode Island, viewers of WJAR NBC 10 -- the region's most-viewed station -- were treated to a story about a local man who faced down a bear on the 11:00 p.m. newscast.
Then reporter Julie Tremmel decided to show her audience what to do if they ever encountered a curious bear. In her segment, she demonstrated backing away slowly, flailing her arms wildly, screaming and throwing things at the bear (she even took off one of her sandals and chucked it at the camera!), curling up into a ball, and laying on her stomach.
It's deliciously awkward in my view, but most of my friends who are local television journalists are decidedly not amused.
What do you think of Tremmel's antics? Do you think her tips will help fend off frisky bears in Provincetown this week?
