In a speech that some view as outlining the themes of a possible 2016 presidential bid, the issue of LGBT rights featured prominently. As Biden tells it, his endorsement last year of marriage equality -- which famously prodded President Obama to do the same -- was no gaffe:
"A lot of people criticized me for speaking out, not long ago, about gay marriage. I could not remain silent any longer. It's the civil rights of our day. It's the issue of our day."
As Politico notes, no other potential Democratic presidential candidate can claim to have advanced the national debate on marriage equality to the degree that Biden did.
