Chris-Christie.jpgGood news out of New Jersey this morning - beyond the same-sex marriages that started at 12:01am. Governor Chris Christie, who vetoed a marriage equality bill passed by the legislature and appealed a ruling from a state judge that said the state had to allow same-sex marriage, he dropped his appeal to the state Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court declined to issue a stay in the lower court's ruling, paving the way for the marriage performed in the wee hours this morning. Now that marriages have begun, Christie is bowing out according to his administration's spokesperson.

"Chief Justice Stuart Rabner left no ambiguity about the unanimous court's view on the ultimate decision in this matter when he wrote, 'same-sex couples who cannot marry are not treated equally under the law today,'" the administration stated.

"Although the Governor strongly disagrees with the Court substituting its judgment for the constitutional process of the elected branches or a vote of the people, the Court has now spoken clearly as to their view of the New Jersey Constitution and, therefore, same-sex marriage is the law. The Governor will do his constitutional duty and ensure his Administration enforces the law as dictated by the New Jersey Supreme Court."

Christie is considering a presidential run and has clung to the tenuous excuse that he'd rather see the issue go up for a popular vote. By dropping his lawsuit now, he can claim that he "strongly opposed" marriage equality when it's time to go in front of the notoriously conservative Republican primary voters, while still appealing to more mainstream general election voters by claiming he didn't oppose it too hard. After all, he dropped the lawsuit, didn't he?
